A weekend in Northern Utah and Southern Idaho

On Saturday morning, we got up nice and early to try and beat the heat, and the discussion of the biting gnats that had apparently hatched at the state park we were going to. It was also said that nothing stops them from biting – not even bug spray.

We headed to Antelope State Park, which was actually on an island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake. As we drove across the causeway, it smelled absolutely terrible. Typically smells don’t really bother me, but this one had me gagging. It was also rather interesting to see how dried up the lake was due to the salt content.

IMG_7182We did a quick hike to get up high enough to see the mountains and the land. We decided to drive a little bit around the island and found the oldest ranch in the state and found some buffalo roaming around.

Once the heat started to get to us, we headed north to Ogden, stopped at a nature garden and did a quick walk and then headed up to Idaho. If I said the drive to Idaho was boring, I think that would be an understatement. It was probably the worst drive – it might rank up there with what I’ve heard about drives through Nebraska.

We drove around Twins Falls for a bit, making a stop at the Shosone Falls. Holy crap was that beautiful! It’s called the Niagara Falls of the West. We stopped at our Air bnb for the time we were there and planned our trip for Sunday morning. IMG_7222.JPG

We got up early and headed to the Sawtooth National Forrest, which was a good 2 hour drive. It also dropped about 30 degrees from Saturday to Sunday so it was like a whole different world. We got up to the forest to find a hot springs – which I had spent a good chunk of time researching to find – only to find out that the river that it was in had flooded, and the water was no longer hot, it was ice cold. That was rather disappointing. We found the sign, the parking and the little hot spring coming out of the rocks, but the water was just too high. We hiked for a little bit on an unmarked path and then headed into town. We walked around the shops of Sun Valley, even though it was rather deserted since it’s such a heavily reliable snow city. IMG_7293.JPG

We headed back down to Twin Falls, went to the downtown area and sure enough, everything is also closed in Idaho on Sundays. We went to a movie just for something to do and grabbed a nice salad at an Applebee’s because we had no other option. We hungout with our Air bnb host’s, had a bit too much wine and a nice short nap before getting up to drive back to Utah to get top to the airport. The delays at the airport just made getting home that much sweet.er
